The Details...

This evening bag is made from burgundy velvet, ruched at the top and detailed with small, round, red glass beads. It features a celluloid frame which has been molded with a design that is detailed with two young girls amongst roses holding a baby emerging from an egg. The bag has a celluloid open link chain handle and fastens with a fold over clasp. The bag has one large central compartment, lined with burgundy silk, and a small internal pocket. The bag frame is stamped on the inside - Depos√© (meaning made in France) and Made in France. The bag measures 23cm x 17cm. The handle is 32cm in length.

A Short History...

The symbolism behind this whimsical design in celluloid is unknown. However, celluloid was a highly popular material in jewellery manufacture during the 1920s. Newly pioneered injection molding processes, meant that cellulose could be used to produce many identical pieces at the same time. This resulted in the cost per item of celluloid pieces being very low and the material could therefore cater for post-war demands for affordable jewellery and accessories.
