1900s Art Nouveau Black Silk and Gilt Metal Decoration Vintage Evening Bag

So typical of its time and wonderfully detailed, this evening bag was most likely created in France between 1900 and 1910.

Condition Report:

Very Good - Minor fading to a couple of ends on the gilt metal thread tassel. This is consistent with age and use. It is only visible upon very close inspection.

The Details...

This cylindrical shaped evening bag is made from black silk. It is detailed with a floral pattern using faux pearls, gilded and yellow silk thread. At the base of the bag, there is a gilt metal circular panel featuring an open-work floral design. Suspended from this panel is a tassel made from gilded thread. The bag opens and closes with a drawstring, which is made from gold coloured silk thread and loops through base metal loops. The bag is 15cm deep and its diameter is 8cm.

A Short History...

The accessories of the Art Nouveau period can be exemplified by an allusion to the natural world. With its organic detailed base, this purse is particularly representative of this aesthetic phase, which began in the 1880s and started to wane in the 1900s/1910s. Sourced in Paris and most likely made in France, it is easy to imagine this piece beside a floor sweeping Paul Poiret gown at a turn of the century soiree.

Wear it With...

This evening bag would be perfect paired with a black velvet tuxedo for evening cocktails.
