The Details...

This elasticated bracelet features 7 chunky rectangular blocks of laminated red and orange Bakelite. The blocks are carved with symbols and numbers in the style of those which appear in the Chinese tile game of Mahjong. Each of the etched sybols and numbers is hand painted. The blocks of Bakelite are interspersed with black plastic rondelle beads. The bracelet is expandable, as it is elasticated. However, when not worn the internal diameter of the bracelet is 5cm.

A Short History...

This bracelet is made from the thermoset plastic Bakelite used popularly in jewellery manufacture from the 1910s through to the 1940s. It has been proven to be Bakelite through testing. This bracelet dates from the 1930s when gaming inspired jewellery was incredibly popular. The Mahjong theme for pieces was most employed because it catered for the game trend and also adhered to the fascination with Eastern Asia which was prevalent during the Art Deco era.
