The Details...

In a typical Chanel styling, these gold tone metal earrings feature a diamond shaped panel embossed with the company's signature quilting pattern. Suspended from each panel is a silouette of Coco Chanel herself wearing her hallmark hat, suit and jewellery and carrying the traditional 2.55 bag. The earrings are signed - each one features a panel on the reverse stamped with 'CHANEL', 'MADE IN FRANCE', the interlocking 'C' logo and copyright symbols. These earrings measure 7cm x 2cm.

A Short History...

These earrings are emblematic of the of the craze for gold tone, large scale pieces that perpetuated throughout the Eighties. They were most likely created by Victoire de Castellane, who was particularly famed for designing midas touched jewellery for the house of Chanel. Her bold creations sprung forth from the pages of Vogue on the likes of Linda Evangelista and Naomi Campbell. It is easy to imagine such supermodels wearing these Chanel earrings, as they stare powerfully from a magazine spread wearing leather and sharp shoulders. Whilst adhering to the quintessentially Eighties taste for gold, De Castellane was also known for staying true to the heritage of Chanel too. Wherever it was complimentary, she would include Coco's favourite material of pearls, the houses' famed Gripoix glass, Camelia-like designs or the whimsical touches, that Karl Largerfeld and Coco adored.
