The Details...

This bracelet is constructed from panels of Whitby Jet. The central panel is an oval shape and is detailed at its centre with a carved shell cameo featuring a portrait of a classical woman. The two panels either side of the cameo are detailed with carvings at their top and bottom. All of the panels are threaded onto black elasticated cord. The bracelet has a diameter of 6cm when unworn, but is expandable due to the elasticated cord.

A Short History...

Whitby Jet is a stone formed from fossilised wood. Exhibited for the first time at the Great Exhibition of 1851, it became incredibly popular with the elite of the period and was especially valued by Queen Victoria after the death of Prince Albert in 1861 - its dark black colour suited her mourning wardrobe perfectly.
