The Details...

This gold tone metal brooch features an organic design detailed with large and small, round blue glass cabochons. The brooch fastens using a trombone catch and the pin is fitted to the brooch with a round hinge. This brooch measures 5.25cm x 3.25cm.

A Short History...

This brooch represents the design aesthetics typical of the Jugendstil movement. This art and architecture style occurred in Germany from the 1890s through to the First World War. Like Art Nouveau, which was popular at the same time, Jugendstil creations incorporated floral motifs but these became abstracted into geometric shapes and organic forms towards the end of the period. It was born out of a concern for the effects of industrialisation in the late 19th century. The natural instead of the mechanical was alluded to and there was a great focus on beautiful objects being hand-made with skill.
