The Details...

This brooch is constructed from black celluloid. It features carved geometric patterns and is detailed with tiny metal studs and small. round, pale blue rhinestones. It is accented with a dusting of golden metallic paint. The brooch fastens with a trombone catch and the fastening pin is attached to the brooch with a tube hinge. The brooch is signed 'DEPOS√Č' is stamped onto the back and this means 'Made in France'. The brooch measures 4cm x 3.75cm. 

A Short History...

Celluloid was a highly popular material in jewellery manufacture during the 1920s. Newly pioneered injection molding processes, meant that cellulose could be used to produce many identical pieces at the same time. This resulted in the cost per item of celluloid pieces being very low and the material could therefore cater for post-Depression demands for affordable jewellery.
