The Details...

This brooch is constructed from black Galalith. It features a ram motif which has carved details and is enhaced with silver leaf and gilding. The fastening pin is fitted to the reverse of the brooch with a round hinge and fastens with a trombone catch. The brooch is unsigned. However, it is likely to have been made by the Parisian 'Flamand' company. The brooch measures 6.5cm x 6.5cm in diameter.

A Short History...

A form of thermoset plastic, Galalith was invented in Germany in 1899. It was popularly used where jewellery designers required deep colours as, unlike celluloid, its surface could be dyed.
