The Details...

This brooch is constructed from cream coloured celluloid, known as ivorine celluloid. It features a portrait of a lady replicating a cameo design. The portrait is in abrass claw setting. The brooch fastens with a trombone catch and the fastening pin is attached to the brooch with a round hinge. The brooch measures 5.25cm x 5cm.

A Short History...

Celluloid was a highly popular material in jewellery manufacture during the 1920s. Newly pioneered injection molding processes, meant that cellulose could be used to produce many identical pieces at the same time. This resulted in the cost per item of celluloid pieces being very low and the material could therefore cater for post-Depression demands for affordable jewellery.
