The Details...

This brooch features an 'X' design in foreign gold and is detailed at its centre with a round red glass cabochon. The brooch fastens using a 'trombone' catch and the fastening pin is fitted to the brooch with a round hinge fitting. There is a small hallmark on the reverse of the brooch. The brooch measures 4cm x 2.75cm.

A Short History...

Just as some furniture designers departed from standard thinking in the 1950s, becoming more graphic and forward-thinking, so too did a selection of jewellery designers. Their work became more raw, simplistic and, consequentially, more radical. Jewellery by some 1950s designers was viewed as almost sculptural, particularly pieces by Alexander Calder and Art Smith. Although this brooch is unsigned, it is clear to see the influence of clean, modernist design in this piece.
