The Details...

This brass brooch takes the form of a lute. It is set with micro-mosaics arranged in a floral pattern. The brooch fastens with a 'C' catch and the fastening pin is attached to the brooch with a round hinge. The reverse of the brooch is stamped 'MADE IN ITALY'. The brooch measures 6cm x 2.75cm.

A Short History...

Micro mosaic jewellery has been a strong feature of Italy's design heritage from as early as the third century. However, it particularly rose to prominence with the dawn of the tourist trade in the 19th century. Brooches and pendants featuring pretty and detailed designs made up of tiny tiles of coloured glass or stone were produced in abundance for visitors to Italian towns and villages. In the mid-20th century, the manufacture of micro-mosaic jewellery in Italy increased further in order to meet the increasing demand for costume jewellery. This brooch dates from the 1950s and is the epitome of Italian riviera chic so popular at the time.
