The Details...

This gilt metal brooch features a motif inspired by Art Nouveau floral designs and Edwardian belt buckles featuring animal figurals. In the case of this brooch, the animal is a dog and his eyes are detailed with green rhinestones. Despite it's early 1900s style design, this brooch was most likely constructed in Czechoslovakia in the 1950s. It fastens using a 'C' catch and the pin is attached to the brooch with a round hinge.

A Short History...

The preferred designs for Art Nouveau jewellery were sinuous combinations of flora and fauna. This brooch is therefore representative of this aesthetic phase, which began in the 1880s and started to wane in the early 1900s. Although this piece was created in the 1950s, it's easy to see why manufacturers were feeling nostalgic about such elegant design.
