The Details...

This brooch depicts a male angel holding a torch aloft. His wings, clothes and the flame of his torch are encrusted with small, round, clear rhinestones. The brooch is plated with gold vermeil, although this has worn over time to reveal silver tone metal underneath. The brooch features an oval plaque on the reverse stamped 'CHRISTIAN DIOR BY MITCHEL MAER'. It fastens with a traditional safety catch and the pin is attached to the brooch with a round hinge. The brooch measures 3.75cm x 3cm.

A Short History...

This brooch can be dated to the 1950s, as the London based designer Mitchel Maer produced jewellery for the House of Dior between 1952 and 1956. His bold rhinestone creations for the house were popular, as they particularly complimented the couture evening wear designed by Dior during the decade. Today, they are the most collectable because they demonstrate Maer's eye for interesting design. To find out more about Christian Dior and Mitchel Maer, visit our 'Designers' section.
