The Details...

These drop earrings feature French Jet (black glass) beads increasing in size. This design is suspended from a base metal open link chain attached to studs, which are most likely 9ct gold. The stud backs are a recent addition to the earrings to ensure they stay securely in place. The earrings measure 4cm x 1cm.

A Short History...

Glass beads have been a prevelant feature in costume pieces since the invention of jewellery, as it is an easily accessible material that can be formed into any shape and dyed any colour. Black glass was known as French Jet and was initially created in the late 1800s to replicate Whitby Jet. Black jewellery was popularised in the 1800s by Queen Victoria, who, after the death of her beloved Prince Albert, insisted on only wearing black. People wanted to emulate the style of their Queen.
