The Details...

This necklace features transparent and black glass (French Jet) muti-faceted beads in various shapes and sizes. It also features base metal beads studded with round, clear, claw set rhinestones. The necklace fastens with a bolt ring. The necklace measures 90cm.

A Short History...

In the late 19th century, Jet jewellery was incredibly popular. Indeed, its deep black tones were fit for the purpose of mourning. Queen Victoria popularised its use in jewellery for grieving after the loss of her beloved Albert. Jet was also apt for the gothic styling and design of the 1800s. As a jewellery material its use continued through into the 20th century, but the more coveted it was, the more expensive it became. A more budget friendly alternative was created in the form of French Jet - shiny black glass able to be cut into many facets. This simulation was used heavily in the 1920s - French Jet suited the flapper look and complimented the machine age aesthetic. This necklace is a-typical of a 1920s French jet piece, as designers loved combining it with transparent glass for maximun monochrome effect.
