The Details...

This necklace features a gold plated rope chain detailed with round burgundy poured glass beads and green teardrop shaped poured glass beads. The finish of this necklace is extremely high quality - with each bead individually mounted onto gold plated hooks and secured with gold plated wire. The necklace fastens with a large scale bolt ring. This necklace is a Sautoir length - meaning it is long enough to be worn in one length or wrapped twice around the neck. To learn more about Chanel jewellery, visit our 'Designers' section.

A Short History...

This necklace is an excellent example of Chanel's dazzling, yet wearable, jewellery from the 1980s. It is possible to date this piece to this period due to records of the collections from this time which feature similar examples and because other examples of this necklace (which still have their signature plaque) are online. This necklace is special primarily because of its use of Gripoix glass. Gripoix glass has been used in Chanel jewellery since the 1920s, when Coco first approached Suzanne Gripoix to make reproductions of Byzantine jewellery. Also, Coco loved how effectively the colours of green and red worked together and this is why we see them replicated a great deal in examples of Chanel jewellery. We can see them used to great effect here in this necklace. This necklace is also a great piece for the Chanel collector - sautoir length necklaces are the most timeless and popular forms of Chanel jewellery. They are a perfect way to emulate Coco's look - she love to wear necklaces with multiple strands and varying lengths all at once.
