The Details...

At the centre of the necklace is a Maltese cross style design which regularly features in many pieces of Chanel jewellery. The 'cross' features gold plated details and high quality Gripoix glass in red and green tones. The necklace fastens using a box claps which is detailed with a circular panel, embossed with the Chanel logo. The necklace is signed - the reverse of the pendant is stamped with 'D√ČPOS√Č CHANEL' and a copyright symbol. This necklace measures 38cm in length. A Short History...

This necklace is an excellent example of Chanel's dazzling, yet wearable, jewellery from the 1970s. It is possible to date this piece to this period due to the 'D√©pos√©' mark, which means 'Made in France'. This necklace is special and collectable for a number of reasons, but primarily because of its 'Maltese Cross' style design and use of Gripoix glass. Coco Chanel liked to include a good deal of symbolism in her work. The use of Maltese Crosses in Chanel pieces are thought to represent the presence of the religious icon in the Abbey of Aubazine - the orphanage where Coco grew up. Gripoix glass has been used in Chanel jewellery since the 1920s, when Coco first approached Suzanne Gripoix to make reproductions of Byzantine jewellery. With its poured glass detailing and symbolic design, this necklace presents an excellent opportunity to celebrate the heritage of a presigious brand and own a piece of fashion history.

Wear it With...

This is a whenever and wherever piece. It looks beautiful for evening, with a Little Black Dress or, for day, sitting on top of a pale grey knit peeking out from under a trench coat.
