The Details...

This silver tone long-line necklace features a decorative chain detailed with rope and twist designs. Suspended from this chain is a large hand-painted circular celluloid panel detailed with an organic and fluid Art Nouveau design of flowers and ivy leaves. Below the panel hangs a tassel (which is perhaps a later addition to the necklace). The chain of the necklace is also detailed with carved wooden beads and Mother of Pearl circles. This necklace is 70cm in length, which is known as an 'Opera' style. It fastens with a bolt ring.

A Short History...

The jewellery of the Art Nouveau period can be exemplified by an allusion to the natural world. This necklace is particularly representative of this aesthetic phase, which began in the 1880s and started to wane in the 1900s/1910s. Not only do the ivy and flowers in the pendant literally portray nature, this piece incorporates natural materials in its design - Mother of Pearl and wood.

Wear it With...
