The Details...

This brass necklace is detailed with a single, claw set, tortoise beetle at the centre of an open-link chain. It fastens with a bolt ring. This brooch measures 42cm in length. The beetle is within an open-back setting, so that the underside of its boday can be seen.

A Short History...

Preserved and dried real insects were incorporated into jewellery designs from the Victorian era through to the 1920s. Creatures that were especially popular were those that posessed iridescent properties, such as butterflies and the tortoise beetles that we see in this brooch. Tortoise beetles met the fashion for the Egyptian Revival of the Art Deco era as they resembled scarab beetles.
