The Details...

This gold tone metal bar brooch is detailed with a single, claw set, tortoise beetle. It fastens with a 'C' clasp and the pin is fitted to the brooch with a round hinge. This brooch measures 4cm x 1cm.

A Short History...

Preserved and dried real insects were incorporated into jewellery designs from the Victorian era through to the 1920s. Creatures that were especially popular were those that posessed iridescent properties, such as butterflies and the tortoise beetles that we see in this brooch. Tortoise beetles met the fashion for the Egyptian Revival of the Art Deco era as they resembled scarab beetles.
